- Aggregate Information: Information that we combine into anonymous groups of Users for data and research purposes. These groups are large enough to reasonably prevent individuals from being identified.
- App: VillageDefense's software application for mobile phones, tablets, personal computers, and similar devices.
- Personal Information: Information that directly identifies or reasonably can be used to figure out the identity of a User, such as your name, address, phone number and e-mail address.
- Services: Services that we provide through landlines, mobile phones, the Website and the App, including text message alerts, voice call alerts, group chat, emergency crime reporting, and crime data reporting.
- User: Anyone who purchases or uses our Services, App, or Website.
- Website: www.villagedefense.com and extensions of that URL.
What does this Policy cover?
The VillageDefense mobile application and services, as well as VillageDefense websites and services (the "Sites") and content therein (collectively, the "Services") offer users a forum to interact with other VIllageDefense users in the same area. This Policy covers our practices regarding the information we collect about our Users (how we collect it and how we use it). Use of our Services, App and Website is subject to this Policy.
What Information Do We Collect and How Do We Collect This Information?
When you use our Website, App or register for our Services, we collect, retain and use Personal Information about our potential, current and former customers. We will collect information that will help us to identify you, authenticate you, contact you, and provide you with better service.
We collect certain information from and about our Users:
Personal Information - We get this information when you register for our Services, fill out forms on our App, or create a profile on our App. This would include information like your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and profile picture.
Device Phonebook - We may, with your consent, collect information from your device's phonebook. We do this, for example, so that you can invite people in your phonebook's contacts to VillageDefense. You can always revoke this consent by changing the settings on your device.
Geolocation Data - For proper usage of the VillageDefense mobile App, we require "always on" location services access. We do a lot of processing behind the scenes to provide you with real-time alerts of crime close to your current location, and we try our best to make sure they are relevant to you based on location. To do this, our app collects your location data, including when the app is in the background. When a user broadcasts a crime alert, this is how we know who is nearby for us to deliver messages to. Sometimes your approximate location will be anonymized and plotted on the VillageDefense map to give nearby users a sense that there are other users in the vicinity.
We may determine location based on the location services of the applicable operating system or browser and information on nearby Wi-Fi access points and cell towers. If you choose not to share your location information, the Services will not function. You can revoke your consent by changing the settings or preferences on your device and/or computer or by deleting VillageDefense from your device.
Telephone Number - We will ask you to provide and verify your mobile telephone number when you first launch the app or try to access certain parts of the Service. For the integrity of our community and to help combat abuse, it's important to verify your account with your phone number. Your phone number is also used to send you text messages when nearby users report criminal activity close to your current location.
Correspondence - Records and copies of your correspondence (including e-mail addresses and phone numbers), if you contact us and information that Users submit through our Services, which includes our alert and group chat features.
Aggregate Information - Non-personal statistical information collected to improve our Services. This includes anonymous information about how Users utilize our Services including, but not limited to how many visitors come to our App and Website, how they navigate through the App and Website, which browsers they use to visit the Website, etc.
Your Content and Usage - You also share information with VillageDefense when you use some of the features on our App and Website, including sending alerts and posting in the group chat. That this information can be read, collected or used by other parties. You are responsible for any Personal Information you choose to share or submit in these instances. For example, if you list your name and email address or share a photo in a post, that information is public. Please take care when using these features.
What if You Do Not Want to Provide Your Personal Information?
How Do We Use This Information?
We use your information to improve your experience and to make our business stronger. Examples include: Provide, Improve and Develop Services - We conduct surveys and research, test features in development, and analyze the information we have to evaluate and improve products and services, develop new products or features, and conduct audits and troubleshooting activities. Communicate With You - We use your information to communicate with you about our Services and let you know about our policies and terms. We also use your information to respond to you when you contact us. Promote Safety and Security - We use the information we have to help verify accounts and activity, and to promote safety and security on and off of our Services, such as by investigating suspicious activity or violations of our terms or policies.
When Do We Disclose Information?
As a general policy, VillageDefense does not sell, disclose or trade your Personal Information to any third party. However, we may disclose information for certain reasons including:
- Legal Reasons - We will share Personal Information with companies, organizations or individuals outside of VillageDefense if we have a good-faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of the information is reasonably necessary to: Meet any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request.
- Enforce applicable Terms of Service, including investigation of potential violations.
- Detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues. Protect against harm to the rights, property or safety of VillageDefense, our Users or the public as required or permitted by law.
- Provide, Improve, and Publicize our Services. We may share Aggregate Information publicly and with our service customers and partners. For example, we may share information publicly to show trends about the general use of our Services.
Are There Situations Where Your Personal Information is Retained After You Unsubscribe from Our Services?
Yes. We keep your Personal Information for as long as your subscription is active or as needed. We may retain your Personal Information as reasonably necessary even after you unsubscribe to: Compliance - Comply with our legal obligations, meet regulatory requirements, and law enforcement. Dispute Resolution - Resolve disputes between Users. Fraud, Abuse and Enforcement - Prevent fraud and abuse, or enforce this Policy and our Service Agreement. Customer Service - Provide customer service support-related reporting and trend analysis. Information, including Personal Information, shared by a User through features on our App and Website, including sending alerts and posting in the group chat or neighborhood dashboard, is retained in our system.
How Do We Protect Your Information?
The protection of your Personal Information is of the utmost importance to us. We maintain strict practices and procedures to safeguard your privacy in accordance with this Policy. We restrict employee access to customer information to only those who have a business reason to know such information, and we educate our employees about the importance of confidentiality and customer privacy. Disclaimer - We will ask for your consent before using information for a purpose other than those that are set out in this Policy. However, it is possible that electronic communications may be accessed by unauthorized third parties when communicated between you and VillageDefense using the Internet, other network communications facilities, telephone or any other electronic means. All transfer of Personal Information on our Website and App is secured by encrypted user names and passwords, and the industry standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. SSL prohibits other web users from gaining access to your Personal Information, and to help protect the loss, misuse, and alteration of your information. In addition, our cloud infrastructure has security features including, built-in firewalls, encrypted data storage, security logs and a multi-factor authentication process.
Will We Notify You in the Event of a Security Breach?
Yes. We will make reasonable attempts to notify you if we determine that we have experienced a security breach and there is a reasonably likely risk of identity theft, or where otherwise required by law.
How Can You Manage Your Personal Information and Opt-Out of Our Services?
If your Personal Information changes or if you no longer want to subscribe to or use our Services, you may correct, update or deactivate your Personal Information and your account through our Mobile App, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Once your account is deactivated, you will stop receiving alerts related to your neighborhood within 72 hours.
What Do We Do with Information Provided by Children?
Our Services are not intended for children under 18 years of age, and we do not knowingly collect Personal Information from children under 18. If we learn we have collected or received Personal Information from a child under 18 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information. If you believe we might have any information from or about a child under 18, please contact us at email@example.com.
What happens in the Event of a Change in Control of VillageDefense?
In the event that VillageDefense is acquired by or merged with a third party entity, we reserve the right to transfer or assign the information we have collected from our Users as part of such merger, acquisition, sale, or other change of control. In the (hopefully) unlikely event of our bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, receivership, or assignment for the benefit of creditors, or the application of laws or equitable principles affecting creditors' rights generally, we may not be able to control how your Personal Information is treated, transferred, or used.
How Do We Notify Our Users of a Change in This Policy?
This Policy is subject to change from time to time. We will notify you by email, through our Website, App and/or through text message whenever there is a change in our Policy.
